The French have given us many wonderful things. Wine, for one; no one does fermented grape juice like the French. Also, croissants, obviously. Croissants are the fucking best. A few years ago I spent three weeks summering in France and I started every day with a walk to a nearby bakery—there were about six to choose from—to buy fresh croissants, and it was glorious. I later tried to make my own and discovered they are literally half butter. This is right and good.

Niçoise salad. Baguettes. The cheeses: Camembert, Roquefort, Brie and Bleu. Edith Piaf. Jacques Brel. La nouvelle vague: Godard, Truffaut, Varda. Les artistes! Monet. Ćezanne. Renoir. Degas. Toulouse-Lautrec. French culture is a gift to the world. What have we given them in return?

Well, there’s this French comedy, coming to Netflix this week, about three forty-something women who bed younger men while on vacation in the south of France. It’s called MILF (July 16), after the profane descriptor for an attractive woman of a certain age popularized by the film American Pie.

So there’s that. MILF: The phrase, not the film, which the Hollywood Reporter called a “movie I’d like to forget.” Don’t say we never gave you anything, France.

Here’s what else is coming and going from Netflix this week, including Cursed (July 17), a new original series reinterpreting Arthurian legend based on a young adult novel by Thomas Wheeler with art by comics legend Frank Miller.
