Unfortunately, Trumpism and Trump fit the characteristics of fascism described by Britt in 2003. However, the Republican Party had been moving towards autocracy for decades, so he is as much a symptom as a cause. The fact that he was flagrant rather than subtle has given us a chance to see this path and change our course. We need to start fixing our inequalities, both civil and economic now, or the next attempt at ending American democracy could be successful.

Over the past few decades, and especially over the past few years with the rise of alt-right media and loss of local reporting, some of the formerly stabilizing influences, like churches, and social groups have become part of the problem. They have become places where dissent is viewed as unacceptable. No discussion of differing opinions is permitted as it could lead to ostracism. This backdrop made it much easier for authoritarian leadership to be accepted. Some people now state with conviction that the United States is “a republic, not a democracy”. They would prefer an autocratic leader who agrees with their primary view (anti-abortion, or anti-immigration, for example), than one who supports democratic, free and fair elections, equality, due process, freedom of expression of views other than their own, or any other democratic norms. With this mindset, they are unable to see the ramifications with respect to their loss of freedoms under an authoritarian regime. This appesrs to be the status of a substantial portion of Trump’s supporters.

Tim Carney is correct. When the laws requiring businesses to close on Sunday were in effect, families went to church on Sunday mornings. People may have invited friends and family over for Sunday dinner. Parents took advantage of empty parking lots to teach their children to ride bikes or drive cars. There was time to indulge in after dinner discussions, with the children present, about politics, current events, and every thing else under the sun. Families had the time and took it to create their own special traditions. Once the laws changed to allow shopping on Sundays and Holidays, we became a society defined by our transactions. Brick and mortar churches began to fail. People began to cluster together in the remaining churches by geography rather than by denomination. Churches with a strong mission effort would find that effort supported by multiple churches. The age of church goers went up. That “sweet spot” where church goers still had enough money left over to support their church and other activities had been messed with by the inadequate wages paid and recession. As weekend shopping hours expanded, so did sales. Holidays were cut short with targeted holiday sales. Transactions, not quality of life, became the motivation. Even Thanksgiving was given up to after dinner shopping. When and where were the youth supposed to magically get the ideas that we hold dear? American democracy? Religion? Ethics? Patriotism? When we die most of those objects that we purchased will be thrown out or given away. The only thing that will remain of us is our character and the imprint that we left on our children. Too many Americans have missed essential lessons if they will allow so much death and destruction without a response. Our path forward has been blocked for far too long. It’s time for We the People to take back our country.
Listen to everybody, if you are a left-winger, then you need to get onto right wing sites and post your comments there where maybe you can change some minds. If you are posting here, then you’re just preaching to the choir. It’s fine posting comments with people that agree with you sometimes, but we need to be posting over where the people really need some education. Put “Trump” in the search bar on YouTube, and you’ll find some right wing kooks that need straightening.

The US has systematically sold its institutions to the white collar racket boys. It began with the ”Reagan Revolution”- that was one of it very meanings.
He is spot on. The Republican party only caved to Donald Trump because they saw how fervently his base supported him. He played to his base’s worst instincts and fears to drum up support, and because of it they no longer care how his actions affect America as a whole. They see everyone against themselves as unpatriotic satanic socialists trying to steal their way of life, and Donald Trump is the savior that wants to preserve this outdated idea of America from the 1960s.
If Biden doesn’t make huge changes that everyday Americans will notice, Trump or someone worse that’s smarter will come in and will be elected in 2024 and finish what Trump didn’t accomplish! America is on the brink of being taken over. This can happen to any country! Americans might think the system is too strong for this to happen but look how close Trump got, and it’s not over until January 20th!! We still don’t know if he will leave or his supporters will allow it! His brainwashed supporters might fight to keep him in office cause they’ve been told the election was stolen over and over again!
