Steve Benen, author of “The Impostors: How Republicans Quit Governing and Seized American Politics,” talks with Rachel Maddow about how Democrats and Republicans speak past each other as Democrats try to govern through policy and Republicans focus their energy on ideological interests and growing and preserving their political power.

Republican rule is no different than religious rule, its not about the many, its only about the few …
And they call themselves Faith & Freedom. It should be called Honestly screwed & Honest Lobbyists ????????
Can’t the states that have Democratic Governors or Democratic Attorney Generals stop the changes in thee other states coming up there trying to change???
It’s not like they don’t _have_ policies, they just don’t feel comfortable sharing them with the electorate.
Steve Benen needs to send Joe Manchin a copy of this book.
Republicans increasingly sound more like a religious cult than a political party. Because they believe they are ‘RIGHT’, they have no problem cheating. There may be an unlikely savior of democracy … COVID. Red states are the most under-vaccinated populations in the country … the Delta variant will have a field day. IT doesn’t discriminate.
Rachel Think, Republican party has given worse Presidents (except Ronald Regan). Republicans were worse and their root is rotten since seventies that’s why they can’t give great presidents. Worse Presidents like Bush and Trump.
Why is Biden allowing trump to continue undermine democracy?
Perhasp 45 was counting on the Jan. 6th “incident” to fuel his own Reichstag fire moment whereby he could declare marshal law and make himself president until-further-notice?
In Europe we see the last convulsions of the US democracy. A weak and divided Democratic Party is no match for the Republican Nazi Party based n the Führerprinzip. The Republican Nazi Party on the road to a glorious victory on the US equivalent of the weak German Weimar Republic.
Maybe it’s time to let an NGO run the country and take care of the people and let congress continue to do nothing.
The Republicans are only working on their own interests and the interests of their big donors. For self gain
The GQP are all a bunch of traitors
END THE FILIBUSTER
Fake news
The modern Republican Party is designed for one purpose only, to keep the rich and powerful rich and powerful. To this end, the Republicans have only three actual policy goals, 1) cut taxes for the rich and powerful, and keep those taxes cut, 2) de-regulate the businesses that make the rich rich, and 3) destroy the labor unions. Anything and everything that Republicans do is aimed at this singular goal.
HR 1 was a desperate attempt by Democrats to legalize cheating.
Trump and McConnell (who are both insane) are taking Republicans off a cliff. Super fun to watch. There’s a bit of collateral damage though.
Republicans are the worst people on the planet.
As fascists do: Grab power and try to keep it for its own sake
Steve sidestepped Rachel’s question about what the Democratic playbook should be. My thought: Look at who is behind the Republican Party, who is funding them, what corrupt influences Republican politicians are under, what malign forces have captured them. THAT is who Democrats are fighting. Look both within the United States and transnationally; there are forces within and without trying to take down the United States; forces who are interested in their own wealth, security, and resources only, and do not care about the common man in the U.S. or elsewhere.
GOP cult: “Democracy is great…only so long as we can subvert it with lies, a multitude of Jim Crow voter suppression laws, egregious gerrymandering, obstruction, sedition, and terrorism to gain power and maintain our corrupt, plutocratic, minority fascist rule!”
It’s quite obvious that these Republican efforts purportedly to promote election integrity are a sham and a fraud designed to do exactly the opposite: undermine confidence in the electoral process in America, and undermine our democracy. Republicans are doing this to impose their minority rule over the majority—-the very antithesis of democracy.
Congressional Republicans just proved–once again–they are unwilling to operate in good faith, first in the House, now in the Senate, unwilling to even pass a BIPARTISAN commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection! Then, they filibustered EVEN debating the We the People Act, which has broad public support among both Democrats and Republicans! How many times does Lucy have to pull the football out at the last minute before Charlie Brown Manchin and Silly Sinema finally wise up? New voting rights protections sorely needed in the wake of new Republican Jim Crow legislation nationwide, a badly needed infrastructure and jobs bill, and numerous other pieces of critical legislation the Democrats want to pass don’t stand a chance if the filibuster is allowed to stand. If Republicans are going to abuse the filibuster, then it’s time to LOSE THE FILIBUSTER!!!
“Until Republicans return to reality and become responsible, they should not be trusted with power again.”
That’s been obvious for some time, the same warning others like me have been advocating, but it’s good that Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney is amplifying that message. More Americans need to understand this.
The constant lies, denials, deceits, delusions, gaslighting, dog-whistles, crackpot conspiracy theories, projectionism, Whataboutism, bogus victimhood, and hypocrisy of Republicans is disgusting and alarming. The Republican cult has poisoned itself with its own propaganda, choosing to live in a dystopian fascist Orwellian fantasy world. The Republican cult has been radicalized to such extent that it poses a clear and present danger to our society, our democracy, and our country.
