After Near-Fatal Illness, Professor Writes About U.S. Health System | Morning Joe | MSNBC
This started in 1983 when Ronald Reagan rolled out the DRGs. Before then, doctors were in control of health care. Insurance companies submitted and paid up. It was so much better to get the care you actually needed. In the 90’s, they promised that Managed Care (insurance companies directing the care instead of doctors) was going to create reasonably priced health care for all. What it did create was a great deal of misery. Medical care used to be considered something that was sacred, and doctors were treated almost as gods. Now they are regarded as vocational employees under the thumb of Profiteers who can’t squeeze patient care tight enough. Let us move towards making medical care sacred again, and render to good doctors the esteem they so deserve as they make great decisions for our care, instead of regarding them as laborers who can’t work fast enough on the assembly line, tweaking humans in a manner that makes the Big Boss ever more rich.
We have all experienced this and now they are refusing medicare patients who are NOT on advantage programs. Many doctors offices here won’t take medicare patients. I was once waited 3 months to see my doctor and after 10 minutes she stopped the interview, and stood up saying we were out of time. This was in a clinic that had been bought out by a huge for profit company that cares ONLY about the profits. I have a supplement that I pay almost $300 a month for but only advantage programs are consided acceptable – with all the copays. Insurance company CEO’s make about $100,000 a DAY! Are they happy yet?
A for profit healthcare system that is constructed for profit? Say it ain’t so. American’s literally voted for this system. “Socialized medicine” is seen by the populous as being unamerican. What do you think Medicare for all is all about?
Professor Snyder has written a very important book. America has a wasteful healthcare system that must be reformed whether by Medicare for all or by giving doctors more time with each patient and more choice over when a patient can be discharged.
Your right Tim, THE LOYAL TO THE TRUTH, not the loyal to the man’s cult.
As a healthcare worker, we are understaffed, underpaid and in constant danger of burnout. Patients never come first, money does
yea… they almost killed me 2 years ago as well… nightmare of an experience… ive had to go to a therapist and am still struggling with the reality of what happened to me… patients rights are a joke… Arizona medical board a joke. no newspaper would report what happened to me. The gaslit me at the VA. its rather unbelievable… somewhere between horror and the surreal. Black Mirror.
Yes, Yes, Yes! Exactly!
If you want your health pay the corporation! Want GOOD health care? Well that’s going to cost you! The King of medical care blocking is Kaiser! I’m living proof, 4 trips to ER and they’re getting around to figuring it out now, months later!
It’s crazy that americans don’t have a public healthy system!
It’s a known fact the citizens of the United States pay more for their health care than other countries. The insurance companies go the the state and federal government asking for a pay increase they can charge the insurance holder. For example they’ll ask for 6% in crease, state goverment / health care broad will give approvel for 4% increas. It looks good on paper and sounds good but the insurance holder is paying the increase. They give approvel all the time. Maybe the state and federal adminstration should take a pay cut to make up the difference, along with the CEOs. How much is being charge depends on how it’s being paid, there is no flat fee. it’s starts at the top.
It is now time for ALL GOOD WHITE PEOPLE AND ALL GOOD COPS TO SPEAK UP and save this nation. The question remains, are there any?
I have heard several MDs say we should not pay for the old ones and statistics cited Seniorsuse morr
How’s Lewis Powell Memo matches with the changes that was done to the system from this books’ lessons.
glad he mentioned the real problem- THE GOP want to be authoritarians. They want eternal power.
designed for the ability of the people at the top of the system to make money. Take your pick of what system.
Your medical system is disgusting.
I don’t know how else to describe “Living in a matrix” than if you think the mainstream media is truthful.
There is no HEALTH CARE SYSTEM in USA
Watched my precious sister-in-law die in most disgusting way
Paid TOP HEALTH INSURANCE over 30years. And sent to hospice to die
Son took her home But we traveled from Australia and fought and got her put on a drip for morphine. They didn’t even know how to set it up. OMG. Hopeless
Absolutely agree. I too have nearly died. Billable is all that matters.
In my experience, the nursing staff were there to make a difference for the patients, and the doctors more often than not just learned what a textbook says, not how to put all the pieces together. For complex health issues, doctors are trained to dismiss and ignore and gaslight. They’re trained to assume all patients are like the white males they studied. And then insurance companies and hospitals/clinics limit their ability to investigate even if they’re inclined to do that. I’ve only seen a few exceptions.
Congress and supreme court have let corporation get away with to much for to long. The medical is so corrupt, greedy now it’s probably too late.
Ever since corporations took over medicine healthcare has left the scene. Housekeeping. in the hospital that I worked in, was given 17 minutes to clean a room. A rudimentary cleaning of a room is impossible under that parameter. When you enter an emergency room there are set procedures ordered by the corporation have to be followed regardless of the patient’s ability to pay for costly tests that arent necessary. When doctors owned the hospitals, patients participated in their diagnosis and treatment. Because the bottom line is what drives corporations, that dynamic between doctor and patient no longer exists.
Americans vote FOR this time and time again. Madness.
This interview alone shows how important it is to dump Donald
Tyranny is what the Republican party is doing. They’re TOXIC with RELIGIOUS beliefs and are morally bankrupt. They must be DEFEATED and PROSECUTED.

As a nurse, this man spoke NO LIES!
We do not need a dangerous vaccine full of toxic chemicals that will not be effective against the coronavirus. 39 peer reviewed studies by ethical, honest and unbiased medical researchers have all reached the conclusion that Hydroxychloroquine is effective against the coronavirus. Lying and biased doctors like Dr. Fauci and others have managed to get this life saving drug banned for treatment against the coronavirus in the US. Apparently to these lying and biased doctors getting rid of Trump and having Big Pharma provide them with 30 pieces of silver is more important than the hundreds of thousands who have died as a direct result of their action. Do the research since the biased and propaganda spewing media has been lying about Hydroxychloroquine from the start and will never admit the truth about Hydroxychloroquine. By the way, it was Trump who recommended its use against the coronavirus on March 19, 2020 when there were reported to be 187 deaths in the United States from coronavirus. Dr. Fauci immediately contradicted Trump and denigrated this safe, cheap and effective drug that had been in use for over 50 years. Of course, dementia stricken Joe Biden has never recommended this safe, cheap and effective drug be used in the fight against coronavirus.
THIS ISN’T NEWS, THE U.S. HEALTHCARE SYSTEM HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR A LONG TIME. WE NEED MEDICARE FOR ALL.
I knew the answer to this question when I had my first job in a Nursing Home at 18. One nurse’s aid was responsible for the care of six people which meant they had to get then up, dressed and down to the dining room. The patient’s who couldn’t
feed themselves had to wait till everyone else was downstairs and their food cold. By the time you got them fed it was almost lunch time and then you had to do it all over! After lunch you had to make beds and bath the patient’s. You should try it sometime. It’s not humanly possible to dress, feed, bath, change bedding and feed again
6 people in 8 hrs. That gives you
This report is spot on. I am a US retired nurse practitioner who could no longer in good conscience, continue to participate in this awful, profiteering healthcare system.
Thank you for speaking up, your insight is appreciated. It is important for people to understand the harmful consequences of the current administration are real and dangerous.
What’s the solution for a heartless corrupt profit driven health care industry? Well there was a democratic socialist who had the answer.
It is what happens when you make health something you can buy…
the rich live…
…and the poor die!
Single-payer isn’t socialism. It’s pragmatism. You pragmatically choose the system that costs less and covers everybody over the system that costs more and doesn’t cover all. And no, it won’t turn USA into Venezuela anymore than it turned the UK, Germany, France, Denmark and all other rich nations into Venezuela. USA would still be capitalist and it would have the best healthcare system humanity has invented so far.
A homeless person in the UK gets medical coverage but a mother of 2 that works 3 part time jobs gets nothing, WAKE UP AMERICA!
This country will take your safety, your health, and even your very freedom in order to extract whatever wealth that it can gain from you. Then, when you have nothing left to give, it will leave you to die.
Escape with your life while you still can.
Healthcare tyranny
Why isnโt anyone writing articles about the healthcare bills covid survivors are now getting and the debt theyโll have for decades?
Well said by the good doctor from Yale. The misuse of technology (as opposed to its intelligent and practical use) will only render matters worse – doctors will be more beholding to a “system” more than their patients, their superiors, their training, their ethical values, and even their own sense of self which is what Dr. Synder is expressing concern about here.
